AAC Planning Tree

IEP Teams must consider the need for Assistive Technology (AT) devices and services with the development of each IEP. AT services include any support provided to help a child with a disability to choose, obtain, or use an assistive technology device effectively. These services incorporate training or technical assistance for professionals (e.g., educators, related service providers, rehabilitation providers), employers, or anyone else who supports the child’s education, employment, or other major life activities.

As this relates to Virginia’s House Bill 2219, training and technical assistance must be considered for any personnel, including school employees or contractors, who provide instruction or direct support to a student who needs or uses an AAC system. Individualized training may be required for personnel to support a student’s use of AAC and meet their unique communication needs. This training helps ensure the student has access to FAPE, including academic instruction and curricula, non-academic programs, and extracurricular activities, as appropriate. This AAC Planning Tree is designed to guide teams in identifying the supports and services needed to promote successful communication and access to instruction for students who use AAC.
