Communication Partner Training

Successful implementation of any communication system requires shared responsibility. All those around the student must be aware of how their behavior and expectations impact the outcomes of the AAC user.  Communication Partner Training helps the entire team "set the stage" for communication. Strategies may include providing choices within daily routines, not anticipating every want/need, setting up communication temptations, and modeling communication.

A good communication partner should:

  • Use the communication system alongside the AAC user
  • Engage in meaningful back and forth interactions
  • Respond to all communication attempts
  • Provide time to explore the system
  • Not expect perfection!
