Device Set-up

"The purpose of a communication display is to arrange language in space so individuals can, by selecting from the available options, say what they wish to say as quickly as possible, and can do so with a minimal amount of effort" (Blackstone, 1993, p. 4).

As the team collaborates and plans for using the device, there are some important factors to consider.  The team needs to work to intentionally and systematically set up the system/device that will best meet the individual needs of the student.  Factors to consider include: organization of vocabulary, voice output, which symbol system to use, and the layout, including the size, background color and number of symbols available.
